Russell Martin

26 August 2008

This is key when trying to get runs and take over the division lead. Russell Martin was at batting practice early, maybe the whole team should follow. WE NEED RUN SUPPORT! The dodgers left 14 b

covered the opposite sex, as the Doyers scored 5 runs in the top of the 9th, capped thankfully by a Russell Martin RBI single that would have led to a blown save by Broxton (filling in for Saito, giving fans a glimpse of next year possibly).

Russel Martin played the Russell Martin roll, coincidentally, but seemed to play it as if he was amped up on something, with the defensive abilities of a superman out there. It was so noticeable that Tim McCarver and Joe Buck spent a good 20 min “Alyssa Milano-ing” him (verbally of course). The prowess of

ers got just enough timely hitting to cover for a few hitters who couldn’t get anything done. Russell Martin, who had an excellent game two days ago, and James Loney combined to go 0-for-6. The Dodger bench also came up short once more, with Jason Repko failing to produce and still hitting .000 and Mark Sweeney failing to raise his average once again (it’s because he didn’t make an appearance, but still).

he Dodger kids looked good early on, staking Clayton Kershaw to a 6-1 through the top of the sixth. Russell Martin had hits in his first three at-bats, collecting his team-leading ninth homer and three RBIs, and Kent, James Loney and Matt Kemp each added RBI hits.

An assist on the complete game surely goes to catcher Russell Martin, who convinced manager Joe Torre to give a gassed Stults the chance to finish off the White Sox. Stults retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to finish with 116 pitches. He also contributed with the bat, smacking a sacrifice fly in the Dodgers’ three-run fourth inning.  Telling sign: With no outs, the Dodgers had Angel Berroa bunt Blake DeWitt over to third so Stults – that is, the pitcher — bring him in. Good show of confidence in putting on the bunt for the everyday shortstop, who has zero RBIs, to bring up the pitcher who has a better batting average and more RBIs in two games.

four on Paul Byrd in the first inning, scoring four times on James Loney’s two-RBI double and Russell Martin’s subsequent two-run homer. They then hung a not-so-fantastic four hits in innings two through eight, recording two hits in each the fifth and eighth and failing to score a single insurance run.

Andre Either has been his usual, somewhat dependable, somewhat disappointing self. Russell Martin is awesome as usual. Jeff Kent is hitting like a 36 year old instead of a 40 year old. Furcal is basically dead. DeWitt has been a surprise but when you call up a AA third baseman, you really aren’t expecting much. That leaves us with the biggest disappointment this season: one Matt Kemp. While not looking terrible, he sure as hell doesn’t look great. Striking out once every 4 at bats is dangerously close to Andrew Jones territory (and let’s not get started on that one). There is constant talk about potential and while he still is young, the Dodgers seem to be only talk potential, and the “maybe next year” talk is already starting. They are only one game ahead of the Padres and the Giants who were both written off weeks ago.

The Dodgers are going to have to pay guys like Russell Martin, James Loney and Clayton Kershaw at some point, so why waste money of guys like Pierre and Andruw Jones?

If you’re going to give someone a huge contract, make sure the player is going to earn that money. A-Rod, yes. A-Berroa, no. And if you’re paying big bucks for many years, make sure that the player is going to be around to earn it. Speaking of which…

caught or held to singles), the Dodgers mounted excellent attacks in the seventh and ninth innings. Russell Martin was at the center of it all, going 3-for-5 and driving in the tying and winning runs in the seventh inning. The Dodgers also showed some patience at the plate, drawing six walks, three by Loney.

ne is dusting off the bugle for the boys in blue at this point, but last year's Gold Glove catcher, Russell Martin, just ditched the tools of ignorance in favor of an infielder's glove (I'm doubting that whoever's mitt he did trot out to 3rd was one he'd ever tried on before which has to be comforting seeing as how he's not played that position in 5 years).  Add to that Andruw Jones' unique ability to leave a game with a calf injury suffered by his own batted ball and it makes for one of those nights where you wish it was raining and none of this had ever happened.
