Juan Pierre

27 June 2009

There has been speculation that Juan Pierre might be traded to the Seattle Mariners or another major league team before the deadline. Lets me realistic though who wants to pay his contract,

The Dodgers went on to win 8-2.

Our amazing determination, age, and production by Juan Pierre and Orlando Hudson have secured us a current 10 game lead in the West and the best record in all of baseball.  This leads me to wonder..... do we really need Manny's juiced balls?

I’ve suffered through the indignation if watching Andruw Jones strike out more times than the “Star Wars kid” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPPj6viIBmU) at Pure nightclub ( www.purethenightclub.com), and I resigned myself to the idea that he would rather pile ribs on home plate than swing a bat over it. I am completely comfortable with this idea. He’s earned every piece of hate that has rained upon his head. Then what does he do? He smokes a single to actually drive in a run! Miracles can happen! So of course, due to having the “attention span of a boiled potato”, myself as well as thousands of drunkards at Doyer Stadium told ourselves, “This is when he’ll break out of his zero for infinity slump”. Never mind that he looked just as terrible swinging at that slider as he has swinging at every other pitch this year (i.e. belly swings first and then the bat), and if that pitch was anywhere but accidentally right down the middle, his whiff would be at epic proportions to the likes of Casey ( http://ops.tamu.edu/x075bb/poems/casey.html). We had hopes. Andruw was up in the 9th inning. The Doyers down by one. Time for the slump to end. Here’s the pitch…High drive, deep to right field…Wait, I was watching Kirk Gibson’s homerun again. Of course Andruw struck out with a chance to do some damage, and of course the Doyers lost with a chance to tie Arizona for first place in what is the saddest race since Steven Hawking challenged Christopher Reeve to a 3 yard dash.

or while you're out there, give Jason Schmidt, Andruw Jones, Nomar Garciaparra, Rafael Furcal, (and Juan Pierre soon) a good ol' show of support pat on the back from their fans in Los Angeles.

Losing Andruw Jones and then Juan Pierre has meant more playing time for their young hotshots Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp, something Torre was either unwilling or unable to do, perhaps because he was stuck by the same “play the most who you pay the most” philosophy that has plagued the Mariners.

walk by Andre Ethier in the first (erased on a double play) and singles by Jeff Kent in the second, Juan Pierre in the sixth and Delwyn Young in the ninth. The Dodgers then mounted a mini-rally in the ninth, but James Loney hit a weak grounder with the bases loaded to give Frankie Rodriguez his 32nd save.

r lead with something beyond the Dodgers’ modus operandi of dinking singles into centerfield. Juan Pierre tripled to score two in the seventh inning, and James Loney went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a walk, a double and a 430-foot solo shot halfway up the right field bleachers. Loney, by the way, is hitting .396 in the month of June. Andre Ethier added three hits on a night when Jeff Kent and Russell Martin combined for an oh-fer in the middle of the lineup.

The top of the lineup made enough noise, with Juan Pierre and Russell Martin each hitting an RBI double and Jeff Kent going 3-for-4. However, the Dodgers hit into inning-ending double plays in the fourth and eighth innings, limiting the Dodgers to a single run in each frame. They likely can’t get away with such play against other opponents, but against the Reds these mistakes didn’t come back to haunt the Dodgers, at least for tonight.
