With Brad Penny looking pretty "done", and Jason Schmidt not even a blip on the radar for any kind of return this year, it's time to reassess what we've got and what's needed.

Wow, wow, and wow. Those are the only three words I have to say after watching the MLB all star game the other night.

To me, that was the best All Star game I have ever seen. There was great pitching, great hitting, and some really good fielding. The game, which was featured in one of the greatest cities in the world, in one of the most historic ball parks, had everything to offer. With guys like Miguel Tejada playing short stop like Derek Jeter, J.D. Drew hitting like Mickey Mantle, and a guy named Nate Mclouth playing center like Willie Mays, this game was nothing short of spectacular. The only thing missing was the babe himself and maybe a slice of some apple pie.

But at the same time, this is L.A. This is the Dodgers. It's been 20 frickin' years and we need some stars to go along with that youth so that Jeff Kent isn't our HR leader with 20 once again. If it's a money issue, we could've spent a lot of that Joe Torre money on a player who actually plays on the field. I'm all for hiring a big name, big salary manager, but you've got to have the team to go with him. The Lakers aren't going to pay Phil all that money if they don't have Kobe. Even small markets such as St. Louis and Cincinnati, have guys who can change the game with one swing. They just don't have any pitching. Let's keep our pitching intact and get a game breaker or two.

Oh my lamb! If it isn't bad enough that our beloved Dodgers are looking to extend their championship-less streak to 20 years, the Lakers...The Lakers...what can we say? That was sick, knots forming in the stomach type television watching. HD did not help me in that debacle. Actually would've preferred to watch that second half in some rabbit-ear antenna inducing, snowy, Low D. Give me the old, chunky graphics that take up half the screen to cover up that mess.

There's nothing like the feeling as you go through your day and co-workers, friends and family ask, "What do you got going tonight?" and you get to tell them, "I'm going to the Dodger Game." Everyone's immediate response is a smile with a response like, "Oh, that's cool" or "Sweet" or "How fun". "I'm going to the Dodger game," immediately sends peoples Thinking Blue as they envision: The Stadium. The Ravine. Philippe's. Vinnie. Nancy B. Hefley. Dodger Dogs. Ten Dollar Beers. The Pavillion bleachers. The traffic. The parking. The traffic. The parking. We can all, as Dodger fans, relate, reminisce and bond over past, present and future Dodger Stadium memories. Now one can argue that any fan, of any ball park, of any team has their own quirks, traditions, and specialness that they can lay claim as to what makes its park better than the rest. But Dodger Stadium is more special than anywhere else. More unique. More of an experience. And it's not the metal and concrete and the blue and the hills and the nice weather that make it that way, it's the people.

ve you gone Todd Zeile? Never thought I'd utter those words but the lack of long balls (ones hit by Dodgers) landing in the All-You-Can-Eat seats is making me yearn for the long lost days of stiff, white power guys in the Dodger lineup. Watching Shawn Green do a Garret Anderson impersonation each night in right field is something I don't miss, but his 42 jacks are something we haven't seen much of since he and Sheff have parted ways. We have no power. Rafael's our power guy. There's something wrong with this picture. We're L.A.  This ain't Cleveland. This ain't Milwaukee. This ain't Arizona. 40 something Jeff Kent should not be our HR and RBI leader each year.  It's time, it's time to deal. And don't give me the the "that's why we got Andruw Jones" excuse. We all know what that was, a two year wish, a two year hope, a two year gamble so that we wouldn't have to deal our youngsters. A theory which I'm down with. But all we need's one. Sending Blake Dewitt down was an unfortunate numbers game for the Dodgers this week.  Relying on Nomar Garciaparra to be your everyday 3rd baseman is a potential death sentence.

Not that anyone is dusting off the bugle for the boys in blue at this point, but last year's Gold Glove catcher, Russell Martin, just ditched the tools of ignorance in favor of an infielder's glove (I'm doubting that whoever's mitt he did trot out to 3rd was one he'd ever tried on before which has to be comforting seeing as how he's not played that position in 5 years).  Add to that Andruw Jones' unique ability to leave a game with a calf injury suffered by his own batted ball and it makes for one of those nights where you wish it was raining and none of this had ever happened.

apparently was the Triple A batting coach in Vegas.  Hopefully he does a good job, we need our Dodgers bats to be on fire this season!

Lets see, what else would interest you to know?  How about the fact that Joe Torre (I still can't get used to saying that) is going to let Nomar and Andy LaRoche basically duke it out to see who will be our starting third baseman?  I seriously hope that Nomar wins the spot.  He needs to start hitting again, not to mention that he needs to be healthy.  I would love to see him play a full season without injury this year!!!
