Brad Penny

2 July 2008

Kuroda is slated to pitch today against the Astros, Brad Penny is likely to pitch Saturday in San Francisco, and Nomar Garciaparra and Andruw Jones showed no signs of regressing.

In the most key of battles, though, it seems that Rafael Furcal left Las Vegas after complaining about his sore back, and this is likely to set him back even more.  As usual, this is bad news for everyone except the guy who gets to play in the big leagues in Furcal’s spot, who in this case is Jason Repko. Technically called up to replace the injured Juan Pierre, Repko had a busy hat day, trading his Las Vegas 51s cap for Dodger headgear and ultimately wearing the Golden Sombrero, striking out his first four appearance (in the leadoff spot, no less) in the Dodgers’ series-opening 4-1 loss.

e game shut out by “blink and you’ll miss him” starter Eric Stultz, who is making Brad Penny, Hiroki Koruda, and Jason Schmidt look as worthless as their arms (in all fairness, Koruda is pretty much EXACTLY what the Dodgers and fans expected him to be). Without knowing when or how the Dodgers will win again, considering that this team is as inconsistent as an Tommy Lasorda’s bowel movements, I spend today rejoicing as the Dodgers are now 2-6 against the American League and the National League is a combined 12-infinity against AL as well. While it feels that there has been a dominance of the AL over the NL has been progressively consistent since the new millennium, although the exact opposite is true with the NL posting a 1,104-1095 record over the AL. Since the 2005 season however, the AL hold the advantage with a 292-213 advantage. Never is it more clear in any sport that baseball is held pretty strictly to the “law of large numbers”.

Derek Lowe, moved up a day to compensate for the absences of Brad Penny and Hiroki Kuroda, went 5⅓ sparkling innings, surrendering only a solo homer to Edward Encarnacion in his 85 pitches. Lowe improved to 5-6 on the season and recorded his first road win since last August. Hong-Chih Kuo and Cory Wade pitched well in relief, as each lowered his ERA to under 2.00.

Billingsley’s fifth win puts him into a tie with Brad Penny for the team lead; Penny has lost his last seven decisions, and no Dodger starter has a winning record. Additionally, Billingsley’s position as Dodger ace may have been solidified with Penny going to the disabled list yesterday, with Eric Stults to replace him Thursday against these same Reds. Then again, the way Penny has been pitching lately, he may have been the worst of the Dodger starters.
